HOW TO MAKE A CUSTOM PAPER TEMPLATE FOR CAR MATS

Here we give you some tips and advice on how to make your own paper templates for car mats. If you have never done it before it can be quite daunting.

Making a custom paper template for a car mat is relatively simple, gather some paper ( any paper will do what ever you have to hand just as long as it is big enough to cover the foot well areas, generally thicker paper is best to use), masking tape if needed, scissors and a marker pen or heavy pencil. Clear the car floor footwell areas, press the paper firmly into the footwell corners , trace the exact contours, and cut along the lines.

Preperation 

• Remove any exisiting mats from the vehicle.
• Vacuum and clean the floorwells thoroughly so your paper sits completeley flat against the base and sides of the footwell.

Molding the paper

• Lay  the large sheets of paper (or taped together paper) in the footwell.
• Push the paper firmly into all the tight corners and curves of the floor pan.
• For the drivers footwell, take extra care to mold the paper neatly around all the pedals and the footrest if you have one.

Tracing the shape

• Using a permanent marker like a Sharpie carefully draw an outline around the creases in the paper.
• TIP - Do not trace your outline too far up the slopping firewall or behind the pedals as bunching up can occur and become a safety hazard. Keep the mat to the flat or gently sloped areas of the footwell.
• Mark the exact location of any factory fixing clips or anchor points.

Cutting & Testing

• Remove the paper from the vehicle and cut along your drawn lines with scissors.
• Place the cutout back into the footwell to double - check the fit.
• Make any adjustments if necessary and trim any oversized edges if the paper binds or bunches.
